European Association of Assay Offices (AEAO) was established in 1991 with the task to create a forum for assay offices in the European Union, which considers the harmonization of testing and hallmarking of precious metals articles. The aim of the Association is to provide communication with the European Commission on issues of common interest. AEAO is a voluntary organization that provides a forum for the exchange of technical information and Round Robin analysis system that includes assay offices in countries not parties to the Convention on the Control and Marking of Articles of Precious Metals.
Federal Bureau of Measures and Precious Metals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and became a member of the European Association of Assay Offices (AEAO), for precious metal articles, on June 12, 2002.
International Association of Assay Offices (IAAO) was founded in London in 2008, as the successor of activities of the AEAO. IAAO has 47 members from 37 countries, including the Directorate of Measures and Precious Metals.
